This morning I went to the Farmer's Market with K & J, as most Saturday mornings in the spring and summer should start. Not only does the Farmer's Market have plants and produce, but it really is also a local craft fair and an international food fair. The different kinds of foods I can remember are: Cambodian, Sri Lankan, Costa Rican, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Greek, American (many a bakery), and I'm sure there were others I just can't remember.
First, while stopping at our favorite apple cider booth, we discovered the best smelling lilac. Now I finally know why my mom loves lilac bushes! Then, I was amazed to see a gluten-free/vegan/raw sweet stand! They had shakes, smoothies, macaroons, fudge, and other delights. I bought some mocha fudge and chocolate goji fudge. The mocha is delicious, but I haven't tried the other yet. They also gave us a taste of their strawberry smoothie - very tasty! As I walked through and looked at all the beautiful breads and baked items (real works of art in many cases), I saw a little sign that said gluten-free behind a cake! It turned out that their standards of gluten-free-ness were not quite up to mine, but still fun! We were thinking about getting lunch when I saw that the Sri Lankan place was all gluten-free and vegetarian food (minus the fried curry somethings that weren't out yet)! So I had a delicious ana bonde (fried potato curry) and something else I can't remember the name of (fried sweet potato, chickpea, kale, corn, and other yummy stuff) along with some fresh lemonade! Apparently gluten-free things have taken off at the Ithaca Farmer's Market and it's about time!
This afternoon I headed to the grocery, as I've been out of town for a week and a half, and while I was shopping I heard a sound like 1000 tap dancers on the roof (it's a big roof over Wegmans). I look out the window to see it pouring rain! Now, this is not pouring rain like Charleston in the summer, where it looks like the whole world is submerged in a swimming pool, but instead just like we're in the middle of a sprinkler turned on high. I decide to run for it, and I was a bit delighted at being soaked by rain. It's been a long time since we had a good thunderstorm - we mostly get that annoying rain with tiny drops when it's really cold. Today, it's a nice and pleasant 75 degrees with big fat rain drops and pretty lightning. Wegmans was full of delicious fruits and veggies today, and I went a little overboard with grapes, avocados, strawberries, apples, and peppers. I come home to a terrified cat - apparently the thunder and rain is freaking him out.
Oh, and I found out from one of my favorite gluten-free blogs that Betty Crocker is coming out this summer with a gluten-free cake mix and cookie mix! I'm loving that gluten-free has become such a fad and the internet has publicized it so widely!
Isn't it funny when you're waiting for a phone call that it just never rings? A watched pot never boils, and apparently a watched phone never rings...
